3 Punjab Police cops convicted for murder, criminal conspiracy
A CBI court convicted Punjab Police officer Gurbachan Singh, then SHO of Tarn Taran police station, ASI Hans Raj, and SI Resham Singh in a 1992 case of kidnapping and fake encounter of two Tarn Taran youths, Jagdeep Singh, alias Makhan, and Gurnam Singh, alias Pali.
The accused were taken into custody after their conviction on the charges of murder, criminal conspiracy, and creating incorrect records.
The quantum of the sentence would be pronounced on Tuesday.
The two youths were killed in a fake encounter by Tarn Taran SHO Gurbachan Singh and others on November 30, 1992, and their bodies cremated as unknown and unclaimed.
Complainant Pritam Singh, father of Makhan, recorded his statement on November 21, 1996, in the case.
The CBI registered a case on February 27, 1997, and filed a chargesheet, stating that Jagdeep Singh was abducted by the police party on November 18, 1992, after killing his mother-in-law, Savinder Kaur, while Gurnam Singh was abducted by the police on November 21, 1992, from his home. Both were killed on November 30, 1992, by a police party, and a case was registered in this regard by SHO Gurbachan Singh, stating that a suspicious youth, Gurnam Singh, was found near Noor Di Adda, Tarn Taran, who later admitted his involvement in throwing a hand grenade in the provision store of Darshan Singh at Railway Road. When he was being taken for recovery of arms and ammunition, militants started firing on them. Gurnam escaped in the firing but was killed in the crossfire. Later, the body of a militant, Jagdeep Singh, was recovered from an orchard. Police cremated the duo as unclaimed bodies.
