Muktsar, June 17

Considered to be the safe conduits, the involvement of women in supply of illicit liquor and psychotropic drugs is increasing day by day. According to the anti-drugs committees, some women have been involved in the illegal trade for over a decade. “The women are as active as men in this illegal trade, especially of illicit liquor and poppy husk. We have informed the police about the involvement of some women in the illegal activities, but no action has been taken against them so far. Some minor boys, too, have been pushed into this trade,” said Ranjit Singh, a member of the anti-drugs committee of Gurusar village.

Singh added, “From the last few days, we have been keeping a vigil in the villages. The miscreants have found a novel way of evading police action by hiding the contraband outside their residence.”

Kulwant Rai, SP, Police Bureau of Investigation, Muktsar, said, “Every day, we are arresting a number of people involved in the illegal trade of liquor and drugs. Our sources are very active and keep on informing us about any illegal activity going on in the area. Some women, too, have been nabbed in the recent past. However, no report suggests that there has been a spurt in the number of women involved in the illegal trade.”
