45-year-old debt-ridden farmer ends life

Muktsar: A 45-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide by setting himself on fire at Sammewali village on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Jagsir Singh. His wife Binderpal Kaur said her husband was under depression over inability to pay off a debt of about Rs 6 lakh.The police have started inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. TNS

Bail pleas of Doda, aides dismissed in cheating case

Abohar: The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge, Fazilka, on Thursday dismissed bail applications of Shiv Lal Doda and aides, Surinder Kumar Tidda and Krishan Kumar, in a cheating case. Doda, his wife, daughter-in-law and seven others were booked for allegedly cheating Asha Rani, wife of a former Intelligence Bureau officer. OC

Sacrilege of holy book, Sikh activists seek stern action

Amritsar: Activists of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Committee on Thursday approached the Akal Takht and the Amritsar police demanding stern action against culprits involved in a sacrilege of “Gutka”. Accused escapes from police custody

Faridkot: Parvinder Singh of Panjgrain Kalan village, held in an attempt to murder case, escaped from Sadar police station, Kotkapura, on Thursday.

He was was in remand till July 24. Cops alleged that the accused pretended to go to the toilet and dodged the police. TNS

Youth ‘poisoned’ to death, five persons booked

Fazilka: Family members of a girl allegedly poisoned her lover, Kulwant Singh, to death in Aliana village. The victim was in a relationship with Usha Rani. Her cousin took Kulwant to their residence where his family members administered him insecticide. Five persons have been booked in the case. OC
