505 gangs, modules of gangsters busted in two-and-a-half years in Punjab

The Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) of the Punjab Police on Monday said it has busted a whopping 505 gangs and modules of gangsters in the state in the last almost two-and-half years.

The AGTF formed headed by ADGP Promod Ban has arrested 1,408 gangsters (including big and small) besides neutralising 16 others in 107 encounters. It has recovered 1,332 weapons and 293 vehicles from these criminals.

As many as 81 gangsters were injured in the encounters, while three police personnel achieved martyrdom and 26 others were injured.

Police spokesperson AIG Gurmeet Chauhan and AIG Sandeep Goel of the AGTF released the achievements of the AGTF on the sidelines of a press briefing about the arrest of six shooters in Ferozepur triple murder case.

The AGTF was formed on April 6, a month after the Aam Aadmi Party took over the reins of the state from the Congress.

The Social Media Analysis Unit of the AGTF identified a number of contacts of gangsters that were uploading objectionable content, such as eulogising gangsters, claiming responsibility and flaunting killings of rival gang members, promoting guns and violence, threatening vulnerable sections of society for extortion besides threatening police officers.

Based on this identification, 203 accounts including 132 on Facebook and 71 on Instagram were blocked.
