The stray dog menace has been haunting the residents of Abohar and surrounding villages. Late Monday evening, a stray do attacked and badly injured a two-year-old girl when she was playing near a brick kiln in Dangar Khera village, about 8 km from Abohar.
According to information, the injured child’s father Binu Lal, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, works as a labourer at a brick kiln. He said that on Monday evening, his wife went to get milk while his two-year-old daughter was playing in front of the jhuggi. Suddenly, a stray dog attacked the child due to which her head and mouth were badly injured. Hearing her cries, some people reached there and rescued her.
TWO INCIDENTS TODAY
- In one incident, a daily-wager’s 2-year-old girl suffered a dog-bite when she was playing near her house in Dangar Khera village here. She is being treated at a hospital in Bathinda
- In another incident, 12-year-old Ishant, a resident of Arya Nagri, was targeted by a stray dog when he was walking in the street today. He was brought to the Civil Hospital here for treatment
The child was immediately admitted to the Government Hospital at Abohar. As the doctors described her condition as serious, the family took the child to Bathinda.

According to local NGOs, there are about 5,000 stray dogs in the city alone and sterilisation drives have not been launched. However, Senior Veterinary Officer Dr Mandeep Singh and Municipal Corporation sanitation inspector Ashwani Miglani claimed that anti-rabies vaccination has been administered to 783 stray dogs.
Civil Hospital sources said that about 2,600 incidents of dog bites were reported last year. They also said that government hospitals provide treatment at just 10 per cent of what it costs in the private sector.
