However, the prime suspect who got the contraband smuggled from Pakistan managed to flee.

In a statement issued today, DGP Gaurav Yadav said the police also seized six mobile phones and a Jio dongle from the bag that the suspect left behind while fleeing. He said the suspect had been identified and raids were being conducted to arrest him.

“The counter-intelligence wing received information about the involvement of a drug peddler hailing from Gurdaspur’s Jaffarpur village in the trans-border smuggling of narcotics and weapons. He recently received a drugs and arms and ammunition consignment through drones near the International Border in Batala, Gurdaspur,” said the DGP. The suspect was going to deliver the consignment to some other party, he added.

Police teams led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (CI) Balbir Singh conducted a raid at Jaffarpur village. The suspect managed to escape after throwing away his bag containing the consignment, he said.

“The suspect has been identified and raids are on to arrest him. Further investigations are in progress to establish the backward and forward linkages in the case,” he said. Efforts were also on to identify his associates, he added.

A case under Sections 21, 25 and 29 of the NDPS and Section 25 of the Arms Act has been registered.
