850 take part in state-level athletics meet organised by Sangrur police
To create awareness against drug abuse among children and youngsters, Sangrur district police under its ‘Fifth Anti-Drug Awareness Campaign’ organised a state-level ‘Junior Athletics Meet’ at the local War Heroes Stadium.
The meet saw 850 participants (boys and girls) competing in various categories, including U-12, U-14, U-18 and U-20. Athletes from 21 districts of the state took part in the event that featured 100-m, 200-m, 400-m, 800-m races, relay races, long jump and shot put competitions.
Navreet Singh Virk, Superintendent of Police (PBI), Sangrur, said that competitions were held in more than 30 athletic events under different age groups. He further said that cash prizes to the tune of more than Rs 3.5 lakh were awarded at the event. Cash prizes worth Rs 5,100, Rs 3,100 and Rs 2,100 were given to the holders of the first, second and third positions, respectively, along with medals and certificates, he added.
Sangrur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sartaj Singh Chahal gave away the prizes, medals and certificates to the winners. The SSP urged children and youngsters to spread awareness in their schools and other educational institutes against drug abuse to create a healthy society. He also asked coaches to motivate children to indulge in sports and games to make Punjab ‘Rangla’ once again.
On the occasion Sangrur district police also distributes Adidas track suits and shoes among the members of the U-23 Punjab Athletics Team that will participate in the ‘Fourth Indian Open National U-23 Athletics Meet’ to be held in Patna, Bihar, on September 28 and 29.
