The Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly — Partap Singh Bajwa — on Wednesday accused the ruling Aam Aadmi Party of reneging on its pre-eelction promise of providing a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000 to women aged 18 and above.

The remarks came amid media reports that the Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is mulling to extend the scheme only to non-income tax-paying women.

The ruling party had promised to implement the scheme in the cash-strapped Punjab during the 2022 state Assembly elections.

“The government is collecting data on income tax payees. If at all, the scheme is implemented, it will only be extended to non-income tax-paying women. Government official also claim, as of now, that it seems impossible to implement the plan,” Bajwa said.

The Congress leader said it proved that AAP made “lofty promises” just to win the Assembly poll.
