Fazilka district, known for its vulnerability due to its proximity to Pakistan, has seen significant drug seizures in 2024, with authorities working tirelessly to curb smuggling activities. The district, which shares a 109-kilometer-long border with Pakistan, is often a target for drug trafficking, with contraband being pushed into Indian Territory, sometimes via drone incursions.
Fazilka SSP Varinder Singh Brar highlighted the challenges faced by local law enforcement, stating, “The police always remained on tenterhooks but shall not allow the neighbouring country to succeed in its evil designs.”
During the year 2024, Fazilka police successfully seized over 48 kg of heroin, 86 kg of opium, 844 kg of poppy husk, 2,12,239 intoxicating tablets, and approximately Rs 44 lakh in drug money. These seizures were made in 231 cases registered under the NDPS Act, leading to the arrest of 348 individuals.
In addition to the narcotics haul, the district saw 183 cases registered under the Excise Act, resulting in the arrest of 180 individuals and the seizure of 36,315 litres of illicit liquor, lahan, and other materials. “Assets worth Rs 7.46 crore belonging to drug peddlers have also been attached,” Brar added.
Authorities also made significant progress in curbing weapon smuggling, with 24 pistols, five magazines, 108 live cartridges, and Rs 5,23,244 seized under the Arms and Gambling Acts. The district’s police also recovered 207 stolen bikes during the year.
The district’s vulnerability extends beyond Pakistan, as it also shares a border with Rajasthan, from where large quantities of poppy husk and other intoxicants are smuggled into Punjab. Fazilka is considered a key transit route for smuggling operations originating from both Pakistan and Rajasthan.
SSP Brar reiterated the commitment of local authorities to combat such illegal activities, emphasizing, “The police always remained on tenterhooks but shall not allow the neighbouring country to succeed in its evil designs.”
