Dr Pradeep Singh, a senior lecturer from Rajendra Government College, Fazilka, has been deployed as the in-charge for the admissions.

The college was promised by the Congress during the Vidhan Sabha elections in 2017. Earlier, children of poor families had to cover a distance of 32 km to pursue higher studies at Fazilka’s government college.

Last year, the state government had arranged the land for the college in the Canal Colony complex here. On January 12 last year, the foundation stone was laid by the then PPCC chief Sunil Jakhar, Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla and Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal on behalf of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, who could not land due to bad weather.

As the construction of the building is likely to be completed by the year-end, the college will temporarily function from the huge complex of Government Senior Secondary Boys Smart School here. Initially, the admissions have been started for BA and BCom courses.

On Monday, dozens of boys and girls visited the transit campus. It has been difficult for them to seek admission online due to some technical problems, they said.

Meanwhile, Recognised and Affiliated Schools’ Association senior state vice-president Sham Lal Arora said the opening of the government college would bring relief to hundreds of families, who could not afford the expenses of private institutions.
