Moga, December 13

The state government today issued an advisory to farmers which stated not to apply urea in excess on wheat crop for a good yield.

Secretary, Agriculture Department, Dr Kahan Singh Pannu, while holding a meeting on Friday with Chief Agriculture Officers of all districts through video conferencing, asked them to educate the farmers on using only two bags (45-kg each) of urea in one acre of wheat crop. He said the urea must be applied within 55 days of sowing of wheat seeds, as otherwise, the chances of pest attack would increase, resulting in loss of crop yield.

Agro-scientists have been asked to hold meetings with the farmers and fertiliser dealers at all block levels for the next few days and educate them on using the fertilisers judiciously in wheat to cut down the input cost. While claiming that there was no shortage of urea in the state, he revealed the state needed 10-lakh metric tonne (MT) of urea during the ensuing rabi season, out of which, 6-lakh MT was already available with the dealers and cooperative societies. Another 2-lakh MT would come in the state in the next couple of weeks and the remaining would arrive in January, he said.
