After clinching gold in South Korea, skating champion Amandeep gets rousing welcome in Malout

Amandeep Kaur, a 24-year-old roller skating champion from Jandwala Charhat Singh village near Malout, received a grand welcome on her return home after clinching the gold medal in a team event at the 20th Asian Roller Skating Championship, held in South Korea recently.

Amandeep, a mother to a young child and tax assistant in the Income Tax Department in Mumbai, was felicitated with garlands as locals took out a celebratory procession through Malout town. She was seen waving from the sunroof of a vehicle, while being cheered on by proud residents.

Her husband, Sehajpreet Singh, a national-level hockey player from Danewala Satkosi village in Fazilka district, accompanied her during the reception. “This is a proud moment not just for our family but for the entire region,” he said.

Amandeep’s father, Harjinder Singh, is a farmer in Jandwala Charhat Singh village, which had never witnessed such a sporting glory before. The entire village beamed with pride at her achievement.

Amandeep said, “I appeal to the youngsters to take up sports seriously. With dedication, even those from small villages like ours can achieve big dreams. Never underestimate the power of consistent hard work and family support.”

Notably, Amandeep and her teammates had earlier brought laurels to the country by winning a bronze medal for the Indian team in the senior women’s category at the 19th Asian Roller Skating Inline Hockey Championship, held in China.
