Former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi on Thursday refuted allegations levelled by PM Narendra Modi at a Bihar rally, saying he never insulted migrants and his three-year-old statement was being “misconstrued”.

The reaction came hours after Modi, without taking Channi’s name, alleged that a Congress CM had said publicly that he “would not allow Biharis to enter his state”.

Channi’s remarks had stoked a controversy during the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. Channi said, “My statement is being misconstrued. All migrant workers who came to Punjab till date have toiled hard. We’ve only love for them, nobody can change it.” “I was talking about AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and others, who had come from outside and looting Punjab. My point has now been proved,” Channi said.“It is not right to present it in any other manner.”
