The Akal Takht has expressed concern over the deteriorating health of farm leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, President of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta Sidhupur), who is protesting on the Punjab-Haryana border to pressure the government into accepting the demands of farmers.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sri Guru Gobind Singh yesterday, in the premises of the Golden Temple, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh said though the concept of hunger strike had no place in Sikh tradition and principle, it was highly condemnable that the ‘anndata’ (referring to the farm community) in a democratic country had to go on fasting for the sake of their rightful dues.

Amidst chilly weather conditions, Dallewal, the convener of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (non-political), has been on a fast-unto-death for over 40 days at the Khanauri border, demanding a legal guarantee for minimum support prices (MSP) and other farm-related issues that were unfulfilled by the Centre Government. His health deteriorated sharply after fasting, leading to severe kidney and liver problems.

Despite mounting health risks, the 70-year-old farm leader refused medical aid even after multiple interventions from the Punjab Government, acting under Supreme Court directives.

The Jathedar urged the government to adhere to the rightful demands of farmers so that they could return to their homes peacefully.
