Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh today met Harjinder Singh Dhami at his residence in Hoshiarpur today and reportedly tried to persuade him to withdraw his resignation from the post of the president of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.

Dhami had resigned on February 17 from the top post of the Sikh body and the Akal Takht-constituted committee that was entrusted with the task of overseeing the membership drive of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

The SGPC executive body is yet to take a call on Dhami’s resignation.

Dhami had resigned on ‘moral grounds’ days after the Akal Takht Jathedar, through a Facebook post on February 13, had condemned the dismissal of Giani Harpreet Singh from the post of Jathedar, Takht Damdama Sahib, by the SGPC executive headed by Dhami.

The Jathedar had already asked Dhami to rejoin as head of the SGPC and the Akal Takht committee.

While talking to mediapersons, Jathedar refrained from divulging the details. He said Dhami should review his decision. He added: “Dhami is an honest and Gursikh person. The SGPC needs an esteemed personality like him on the top post.”

The Jathedar spent about half an hour with Dhami and his family. “I came to congratulate the Dhami family that has been blessed with a child after a long time,” he told mediapersons.

On the five-member committee, he said the ‘issue was being analysed’.

Earlier, before leaving Amritsar, he said Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who was convicted in the November 1984 Sikh massacre case, deserved an exemplary punishment. He said strict action should be taken against the persons involved in the Sikh massacre so that nobody thought about committing such a heinous crime in future.
