The announcement of Arora's elevation as the state party chief was made by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann himself.

Also, the Punjab New and Renewable Energy Minister, Arora's elevation as the state party president was in the works for quite some time, though the final decision was taken at a meeting of the AAP Parliamentary Affairs Committee in Delhi on Friday.

Being a prominent Hindu face, his appointment at the helm of affairs would help the party attract Hindu voters, who are presently being wooed by the BJP.

Mann had recently expressed his desire to step down as the party president, citing his preoccupation with his duties as the Chief Minister of Punjab. He had been holding the position since January 2019. Though the party had earlier experimented with appointing a “working president” in Principal Budh Ram, to work along with Mann, this apparently did not work.

Arora, known for his organisational skills and his ability to carry people along, is a two-time MLA and had won the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections with the highest margin.

Arora has been tasked with the responsibility of building the party cadre at the grassroots level. Considered “easily approachable” by the party workers and leaders, he will have the major task of building the party organisation at the ground level, amidst threat of a resurgent Congress and the BJP aiming to make valiant inroads in state politics.
