Former Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) Tarlochan Singh has written to Sikh MPs in Canada and the Jathedar of Akal Takht to work for getting rescinded a Quebec law that prevented public servants, including cops and teachers, from sporting religious symbols such as veils and turbans.
“I have come to know that in Quebec (Canada), a law banned the wearing of turban by public servants, including teachers, police officers and judges,” Singh wrote in a letter to Canadian Sikh MPs and a separate missive to Akal Takht Jathedar.

“I fail to understand why the Sikh MPs in Canada have not yet taken up this issue. The SGPC is also perhaps not aware of this law in Canada,” he said. “The Catholic hierarchy may be approached for help. In the UK, Sikhs have got similar laws amended,” he said.
