He said such nefarious bids to scare people could lead to unrest in the city. People were already concerned over increasing incidents of snatchings, thefts and attacks on opponent groups, he added.

On April 16, 2023, some miscreants had fired outside Guru Nanak Khalsa College located on the Abohar-Malout road. The preliminary investigation indicated that some goons were hired to gain control of the college students’ union. A case was registered under Sections 307, 160, 148, 149 and 427 of the IPC and Sections 25 and 25 (7) (1) of the Arms Act. Later, three suspects were also arrested in the case.

As elections in colleges are held after the Panjab University Students’ Council poll, bikers created ruckus by waiving weapons on the Gaushala road and the Abohar-Fazilka road.

According to information, hundreds of students organised a procession carrying posters of their candidates. Soon the commuters who were stuck in a jam sent videos of armed youngsters to cops but to no avail.

The residents said some rowdy youths were trying to spoil the peaceful atmosphere of the city.
