The arrival of 121 pilgrims from Nanded Sahib, and 644 labourers from Rajasthan, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh in the district in the last 48 hours has put the district administration and the Health Department in a difficult situation.

The administration has arranged quarantine facilities for these persons in educational institutions, but this has evoked opposition from locals as three of the pilgrims were found Covid-19 positive on Wednesday.

Fearing infection, many residents of Partap Singh Nagar and Jaito Road in Kotkapura have opposed the quarantine facilities for the pilgrims and labourers.

However, the authorities said locals need not worry, claiming that no Covid-19 patient was being kept in schools. The patients have been quarantined in the schools as a precautionary measure so that they don’t come into contact with their family members and other persons till they test negative for the virus, said Dr Rajinder Kumar, Civil Surgeon, Faridkot.

“Putting an individual under quarantine at his/her residence is risky in the absence of strict vigilance,” said a senior officer in Kotkapura. — TNS
