Asian Games double gold medallist Hari Chand dies at 69

Hoshiarpur, June 13

Long-distance runner Hari Chand, who won two gold medals at the 1978 Bangkok Asian Games, passed away on Monday morning at his native village Ghorewaha in Hoshiarpur district.

Chand had retired as CRPF Commandant. He was 69.

Chand won a gold medal at the 1975 Asian Championship in 10,000 metre and a bronze medal in 5,000 metre. Later, he won two gold medals at the 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok in the 5000m and 10,000m events. He also participated in two Olympic Games in 1976 and 1980.

Chand was also conferred with the Arjuna Award.

CM Bhagwant Mann has expressed his condolences over the death of the athlete. Mann said the double gold medalist from Hoshiarpur was the pride of Indian athletics and he would be a source of inspiration for the generations to come.

Chand was undergoing treatment at Capitol Hospital, Jalandhar. The cremation is expected to be held on June 14 June at Ghorewaha village, near Tanda, in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district.
