Autonomous institute: Malerkotla Govt College to submit proposal for upgrade
Malerkotla, July 30
The Government College, Malerkotla, along with seven other institutes, has been identified for upgradation as an autonomous college by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
However, students, their parents and the staff were apprehensive about the government’s “hidden agenda” to pull out from its responsibility of providing financial assistance by allowing the institutes to review the existing courses and decide fee structure.
The college management has started the process to submit a proposal at the office of Director DPI (Colleges) on Wednesday morning.
Established in 1926, the Government College, Malerkotla, had trimmed the parent-teacher fund (PTF) by more than 25 per cent this year.
Officiating Principal Mohammad Shakeel said by decreasing the PTF from Rs 3,500 to Rs 2,500, the college assisted majority of students who come from the poor and middle class families.
As the admission process is underway, the college expects to enrol more than 3,000 students in 6 six undergraduate and 11 postgraduate courses this year.
Out of 64 teachers, only seven are regular while others work as guest faculty or part-time lecturers.
Yesterday, Administrative Secretary KK Yadav had termed teachers’ apprehensions baseless and clarified that these colleges would continue to get the existing financial support from the government.
