The 63-year-old flagged the excessive use of pesticides in fields, causing harmful effects on ecology and soil. Back in 1996, Dutt had begun holding meetings about damages the chemicals/pesticide reliant crop cycle would have on the state. Due to his efforts, nearly 3,000 farmers in the state have switched to organic farming.

Dutt has worked extensively in Malwa, Majha, Doaba and Puadh to promote crop diversification and persuade farmers to quit using pesticides.

Speaking to The Tribune, Dutt said, “When I had started off, people viewed organic farming models with scepticism. It feels good that recognition is being accorded to our work. We still have a long way to go.”

Dutt is among the 10 luminaries from the country selected for the award. He is the only one from the state to be honoured.
