Following the Union Cabinet's approval of bills to implement the One Nation, One Election (ONOE) system, Partap Singh Bajwa, Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Punjab Assembly, on Friday accused the BJP-led Government of conspiring to weaken India's federal structure.

Bajwa expressed opposition to the move, stating, “As per the Indian Constitution, India is a union of states. Each state is unique, with its own complexities, issues, and priorities. The imposition of ONOE will undermine the rights of the states, fostering centralization and authoritarianism.”

He further warned that the BJP’s push for ONOE would jeopardize the country’s federalism and diversity. “Simultaneous state and Lok Sabha elections would result in national issues overshadowing state-specific concerns, diminishing the significance of regional politics and issues,” Bajwa added, emphasising the potential negative impact on India’s future.
