Partap Singh Bajwa, Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, has called upon leaders of all political parties in Punjab to discuss the impending delimitation of parliamentary constituencies, scheduled for 2026. Bajwa expressed serious concerns about the potential consequences of delimitation, emphasising that it’s not just southern states that will be affected, but also northern states like Punjab.

“Since we belong to Punjab, leaders of all the political parties of the state should come on a single platform to figure out something,” he added.

Bajwa noted that the Lok Sabha currently has 543 MPs, which may increase to approximately 848 after delimitation. Punjab’s parliamentary seats will rise from 13 to around 18, but its representation will decrease percentage-wise, potentially marginalising the state further. In contrast, overpopulated states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar will gain more seats, with BJP holding a strong presence in these states.

Bajwa highlighted Punjab’s unique situation, being a state dominated by the minority Sikh community, with BJP having minimal political significance. He cautioned that the BJP-led Union Government may continue with delimitation using the existing method, which could harm Punjab’s interests.

The Leader of the Opposition warned that Punjab’s reduced political representation in the Parliament will weaken its ability to defend its rights and interests. He cited the state’s neglect by the BJP-led Centre, despite having 13 Lok Sabha MPs, and expressed concern about the potential consequences of further reduced representation.

Bajwa also mentioned attempts to sabotage Punjab’s claims on its capital and river waters, as well as conspiracies to destroy the state’s economy, exemplified by the paddy procurement crisis of 2024. Additionally, Punjab’s pending RDF funds of Rs 8,000 crore remain unreleased.
