The Batala police have globalised their crackdown on terror activities by securing five red-corner notices from the Interpol against the gangsters who have been regularly ordering their local accomplices to create terror and chaos in the town.Batala is among the select few police districts of Punjab that have approached the Interpol in their fight against terror.SSP Suhail Qasim Mir has adopted a dual strategy to deal with increasing crime cases, particularly those pertaining to extortion, by forming dedicated teams to deal with the situation and also facilitating red-corner notices to fugitives.Extortion calls received by industrialists in the recent past have given anxious moments to the cops. Almost all these calls have come from gangsters settled in foreign lands.

More such notices are being issued by the Interpol in the next few weeks on the request of the Batala police.

The Interpol is the international criminal police organisation having its headquarters in France.

A red-corner notice is a request issued by the Interpol to the law-enforcement agencies throughout the world to locate and provisionally arrest a person wanted for prosecution or for serving a sentence.

Police officials say it is not an arrest warrant in itself, but simply a request for international cooperation in locating and detaining a fugitive.

In the first list, the Batala police has secured red-corner notices against Harpreet Singh, alias Happy Passian, who is also being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Gangsters Pavittar Singh, Hushandeep Singh, Shamsher Singh and Hari Singh are the others who figure in the list.

SSP Qasim Mir said, “In the past few years, investigations have revealed a disturbing pattern. While local operatives involved in crimes such as grenade attacks, targeted killings and shootings are apprehended promptly and sent to jail, the principal conspirators remain beyond the reach of the Indian law-enforcement as they are operating from the safety of foreign territories.”

Facilitating a red-corner notice involves months of documentation and coordination with national and international police agencies.

The Batala police are actively coordinating with Central agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Intelligence Bureau (IB), and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and international law-enforcement bodies through the Interpol.
