Chandigarh, August 13

The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Chandigarh, has granted bail to Beant Singh assassination case convict Gurmeet Singh.

His counsels said the application for the pre-mature release of the convict was pending before the authorities. They argued for the bail in view of an order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court passed in January 2023 ordering the release of convicts on regular bail who had completed life sentences, but the decision as regards their permanent release was pending before the competent authorities.

Gurmeet Singh has been behind bars for over 27 years.
