Congress leader and former Punjab Speaker Rana KP Singh on Tuesday condemned BJP leader Nishikant Dubey’s remarks against the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of India, calling it as an “attempt to weaken” the country’s judiciary.

“Such attempts are deliberately designed to intimidate, hoodwink and weaken the country’s judicial system, which has stood the test of time and has ensured the survival of democracy and the Constitution," he said in a statement.

Dubey had launched a broadside against the Supreme Court on Saturday, saying Parliament and state Assemblies should be shut if the apex court had to make laws.

He also took a swipe at CJI Sanjiv Khanna, holding him responsible for “civil wars” in the country.

The BJP MP's remarks came following the Centre's assurance to the court that it would not be implementing some of the contentious provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act till the next day of hearing after the court raised questions over them.

The senior Congress leader said though the BJP had distanced itself from the “contemptuous remarks” of the MP, it remained to be seen as what action the party would take against him.

“It is not an ordinary or the off the cuff remark," he said.
