Eyewitnesses said the blast was caused by potassium-based chemicals stored in the house for manufacturing firecrackers. The blast was so powerful that the entire rooftop was blown off and bricks landed 30-40 m away from the spot.

“Household items were destroyed, and my daughter, who was cooking food in the kitchen, was also injured,” said Gurmel Singh, whose house is situated in the vicinity. Other nearby houses also suffered heavy damage due to the blast.

Locals said the house belonged to Kala. He had allegedly stored some chemicals and other material used for manufacturing crackers.

ASI Sukhchain Singh from the Mamdot police station said Kala was badly injured and his wife Kiran also suffered severe burns. “Both have been admitted to a private hospital in Ferozepur. An investigation has been launched to ascertain how the hazardous material was brought to the house, besides identifying lapses etc.,” he said.
