Briefs: 1 kg heroin seized, 2 held

Sangrur: The district police have claimed to have busted an inter-state racket of “drug suppliers” by arresting two persons. The police also seized over 1 kg heroin/white powder from them. Those arrested were identified as Ravi of Jakhal town in Fatehabad district and Harpreet Singh of Cheecha village in Amritsar district.

Public holiday on July 31

Chandigarh: The state government has declared a gazetted holiday on July 31 to commemorate the martyrdom day of freedom fighter Shaheed Udham Singh. Addressing a press conference, AAP state president and minister Aman Arora said this had been a long-pending demand of the Kamboj community. He said the government had also decided to name the Bhawanigarh-Sunam-Bhikhi-Kotshamir road as "Shaheed Udham Singh Marg". The government would organise a state-level function at Sunam, the birthplace of Shaheed Udham Singh, to commemorate his martyrdom day.

Retirement age of medical faculty up

Chandigarh: The Finance Department has approved the proposal of the Medical Education and Research Department to increase the retirement age of doctors and dental faculty, governed by the Punjab Dental Education (Group-A) Service Rules, from 62 to 65 years. The decision would extend the service period of 113 professionals.

60 booked for blocking road

Fazilka: At least 60 persons, including women, have been booked for staging a protest on the Fazilka-Ferozepur highway by placing the body of an accident victim on the road. Mohindro Bai of Thara Singh Wala Uttar village of Jalalabad subdivision died in a road accident a few days ago. Her family members and villagers had blocked the highway demanding the arrest of the accused.

Labourer dies in mishap

Sangrur: A labourer and two stray cattle were killed after being hit by a speeding vehicle on the national highway at Bhawanigarh on Tuesday morning. A case has been registered against the unidentified driver of the vehicle under Section 106 of the BNS at the Bhawanigarh police station.
