Briefs: 152 drug smugglers nabbed in Punjab

Chandigarh: On the 101st day of the “Yudh Nashian Virudh”, the police on Tuesday arrested 152 drug smugglers and seized 1.6 kg heroin and Rs 3.56 lakh drug money from them. With this, the number of total drug smugglers arrested under the drive has gone up to 16,886 so far.

Abohar farmers protest canal water shortage

Abohar: Farmers from several villages staged a dharna outside the Canal Department office in Abohar. They were protesting against "negligible" canal water supply in tail-end villages. Farmers claimed the "erosion of sub-canals" like Malukpura Minor, Lambi Minor, and Panjawa Minor had disrupted supply, thereby adversely affecting the sowing of cotton and other crops.

Scientific awareness camp

Sangrur: A three-day state-level scientific awareness camp organised by the Taraksheel Society, Punjab, concluded at the Taraksheel Bhawan, Barnala, on Monday evening. Over 70 students from various government and private schools participated in it. They were honoured with "Samman Patras" and Taraksheel books. Key speakers included Rajinder Bhadaur, Dr Rajinder Pal Singh, Surjit Tibba, Sumeet Singh, Principal Harinder Kaur and others.

Man dies of ‘poisoning’, wife booked

Muktsar: Shivtar Singh (40) lost his life, while his wife Khushmandeep Kaur and parents, Surjit Singh and Jaswinder Kaur, fell ill after allegedly consuming some poisonous substance at Gurusar village in the Gidderbaha subdivision on Monday night. The condition of Surjit and Jaswinder is critical, while that of Khushmandeep is stable. The police have booked the deceased’s wife following a complaint by his brother Jagtar Singh. The complainant alleged that Khushmandeep administered poison to the entire family.
