The Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) on Tuesday picked Mandeep Singh, brother of the main accused in the murder case of a Shiv Sena leader, as its candidate for Tarn Taran Assembly bypoll scheduled to be held on November 11.
Mandeep’s brother Sandeep Singh, alias Sunny, is allegedly involved in the 2022 killing of Siv Sena leader Sudhir Suri. He had also allegedly attacked three former policemen in the Patiala jail on September 10, resulting in the death of one of them.
The Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) is led by Khalistan sympathiser and Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha MP Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged in the Assam’s Dibrugarh jail.
He, along with associates, was arrested under the stringent National Security Act two years ago.
Amritpal’s father Tarsem Singh and Faridkot Lok Sabha MP Sarbjit Singh Khalsa said the decision to field Mandeep was taken “keeping in view the sacrifices made by Sandeep Singh for the Panth”.
They alleged that history was replete with instances of human rights violations against the Sikhs.
