BSF jawan injured as IED goes off near border fence in Punjab sector
A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted ahead of the border fence in the Punjab sector detonated while a patrol was trying to defuse it.
On the intervening night of April 8-9, during an area domination patrol ahead of the fence, a BSF patrol detected suspicious items well inside the Indian territory.
The patrolling was aimed to dominate the area and ensure the safety of troops, defence personnel and local farmers who frequently traverse and ply on the route during the day time.
During this operation, the troops identified a suspected IED planted ahead of the fence, indicating an attempt to target security forces and farmers, a BSF officer said.
Further inspection revealed a network of concealed wires in the fields, confirming the presence of multiple IEDs.
While cordoning off and sanitising the area, the detonating device of the IEDs, which was concealed, accidentally got triggered off, resulting in serious leg injury to a BSF jawan.
Despite the inherent risks, the troops continued their operation, successfully securing the area and preventing a potentially massive tragedy to force personnel and farmers, he added.
After day break, a BSF Bomb Disposal Squad reached the spot, thoroughly searched the area and after sanitising the area diffused the IEDs in situ.
While recovering of narcotics and weapons is quite frequent in border areas, the detection of IEDs is rare, BSF officers pointed out.
