The Punjab Government has launched a canal water project, worth Rs 3.40 crore, in the Dirba Assembly constituency. The project will benefit over 1,300 acres of land and involves laying of pipelines in Chhajli, Hariyau and Gidriani villages.
While starting the pipeline-laying work of the project today, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, who is also Dirba MLA, said the project would provide canal water to hundreds of farmers in the area and also increase their agricultural income, besides improving soil fertility
Cheema said as this project would benefit 1,300 acres, the farmers would no longer need to use expensive diesel for their pumps to irrigate their crops. Besides, experts also believed that canal water contained more nutrients than groundwater which would further benefit the farmers, he added.
In reply to a question, regarding the Ludhiana West Assembly by-election, Cheema claimed that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) would surely win the election while other parties' candidates would lose their security deposits. On the issue of river waters, Cheema said Punjab could not afford to give even a single drop of water to other states as 117 blocks, out of the 153 blocks in the state, had been declared in dark zone.
