Condemning the brutal gangrape and murder of the 26-year-old veterinary doctor from Hyderabad, hundreds of social activists on Sunday evening organised candle marches in Hanumangarh and Abohar.

Leading the protests, senior social activists Shaina Arora, Prof Suman Chawla, Sushila Kheechad and Gulab Kanwer said the law of the country was supreme for them but it unfortunately did not ensure that the accused responsible for such brutal incidents would be hanged. “Not only more teeth need to be provided to the amended Act but speedy trials and exemplary punishment should also be guaranteed. Executions of the convicts are deliberately delayed in the process of mercy petitions and other options. With this, there will be no end to the ghastly incidents of gangrapes and killings,” they feared.

The protesters carried placards reading ‘Stop violence against women’ and ‘Hang Hyderabad girl’s gangrape and killing accused’, etc. They fixed candles at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk before dispersing and observed a two-minute silence for the deceased.

Some NGOs jointly took out a candle march on Sunday evening from Nehru Park to Shaheed Chowk, where “Ram naam jaap” was performed for peace to the departed soul.
