Case against 35 for violence over statue installation
The Dirba police have registered a case against 35 persons belonging to two groups, who allegedly pelted each other with stones following an argument over the installation of a statue of Dalit icon BR Ambedkar at Baghrol village a day before.
The statue was to be installed near a bus stand after the village panchayat passed a resolution on the demand of the Dalit community in this regard.
Gursewak Singh, a complainant in the case, said they were stopped by some people from installing the statue and attacked by them with bricks.
He told the police that some of them were taken to the Sangrur Civil Hospital for treatment after they suffered injuries in the attack.
In a counter complaint, village resident Sarbjit Kaur said Gursewak and his companions were installing the statue in front of her house.
She said when she objected to it and asked them to install it somewhere else, Gursewak and others started abusing her and pelted her with stones.
Station House Officer (SHO) Kamaldeep Singh said no arrest had been made in this case so far as investigation into the case was in progress.
