The Union Government has taken a serious note of the widespread pollution in the Buddha Nullah and the Ghaggar that pass through various parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

After Rajya Sabha member Satnam Singh Sandhu raised the issue, Union Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav has called a high-level meeting of all stakeholders in New Delhi on January 19.

“The meeting will be chaired by Union Minister Yadav. Top functionaries from all Central ministries and the state governments of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan will participate in the meeting,” the MP said.

Sandhu informed Yadav that the unabated flow of effluents, untreated sewage, industrial, dairy and domestic waste had turned Buddha Nullah into one of the most polluted water bodies.

“The Ghaggar, which was once an important water source for several northern states, is rapidly deteriorating due to neglect and lack of proper environmental management,” he said.

Sandhu urged Yadav to ensure strict enforcement of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act and other relevant regulations to rejuvenate the Buddha Nullah and the Ghaggar.
