Gurdaspur, June 15

The local police today arrested Jaimaljit Singh, alias Jaimal, son of renowned Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila, and his accomplice Raj Kumar Shinda for possessing 1.70 kg opium.

SP Mukesh Kumar said the two were travelling in a Swift car when the vehicle was signalled to pull over at a checkpoint. The cops recovered the contraband from the car after a search. A case under the NDPS act had been registered.

Jaimaljit is a resident of ward No. 21, Ludhiana, while Shinda hails from Tilak Nagar, Krishapuri West, New Delhi. Songwriter and composer Chamkila along with his wife Amarjot Kaur and two members of their band was gunned down by unidentified assailants at Mehsampur village in Jalandhar on March 8, 1988.
