Citing education as a priority sector, he said after achieving top position in school education, his next aim was to make Punjab No.1 in higher education and technical education.

In line with his government’s thrust on education, the CM said he would inaugurate 18 new fully functional degree colleges and 25 ITIs on October 2.

Though law degrees were also being conferred by Guru Nanak Dev University, Punjabi University and Panjab University, apart from the subject being taught in about 30 colleges of the state, there was only one law university (Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala) in the state so far, he pointed out, adding the new university would enable specialised law courses to be offered to state’s youth.

He said classes would be started in a transit campus till the main campus was ready, for which 25 acres had been earmarked in Kairon village. “Coming up at Kairon village, the university is a real tribute to former Chief Minister Partap Singh Kairon, who was the architect of the modern Punjab and is credited with setting up PAU, Ludhiana, which ushered in the green revolution,” said Capt.

The CM said three universities, namely Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University, Patiala; Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University, Patiala; Amity University; and Plaksha University had been established in Mohali.

Earlier, Higher Education Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa said the new university would prove to be a boon for quality law education in rural and border areas. He said at present, GNDU was handling the affairs of the proposed university and the process to appoint a new VC would start soon.

Jaspal Singh Sandhu, GNDU Vice Chancellor, said four courses had already been approved for the university.
