A day after the Congress high command issued show-cause notice to former PCC president Sunil Jakhar, several leaders within the party have questioned the move.

Jakhar was issued notice for reported derogatory statement against party leaders and attributing motives to the leadership thinking on communal lines while deciding the Punjab CLP leader. All-India Congress Committee secretary Raminder Singh Awala has come out in support of the senior party leader.

Alleging Jakhar was being targeted to weaken the party, he said: “Where were the action seekers when 42 MLAs supported Jakhar’s candidature as CLP leader?”

Condemning the notice, Awala, requested the party high command to “desist from such action which was detrimental to building the party in Punjab”.

The party circles are now abuzz with possible action against other PCC leaders who had spoken against the leadership, before and after the Assembly elections.

Party MP Jasbir Singh Gill had spoken against Punjab affairs incharge Harish Chaudhary. Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh, criticised then PCC president Navjot Sidhu. Bassi Pathana candidate GP Singh openly spoke against ex-CM Channi. “Going by the high command’s standards, all these are anti-party activities. Action should be taken against all such leaders,” pointed out a Congress leader.

Avoid such move
