Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is likely to visit flood-affected areas of Punjab soon. Though the date of the visit has not been finalised, senior party leaders confirmed efforts were on to coordinate the visit as the party’s Adhikar Yatra in Bihar has ended.
A senior party leader said he could visit Sultanpur Lodhi or Ajnala.
Seeing the grim flood situation, the party has cancelled all its programme, including the meetings of the observers to kickstart the process of shortlisting names for district unit presidents.
A senior leader said on a call given by Gandhi, the state unit has started mobilising its cadre to undertake relief and rehabilitation measures in flood-affected 12 districts in the state.
In a message on his X account, Gandhi said “The loss of life and widespread devastation caused by the floods is extremely sad and painful. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish the safety of all the stranded people.”
“Farmers, labourers, herdsmen and common citizens should get immediate and effective help. Congress leaders and workers are urged to make relief work your highest priority at this time — that is your only responsibility. We have to hold the hands of the people of Punjab together,” he added.
State Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said the party has told its district units to prioritize the rehabilitation and relief work. He said a control room was being set up at the state headquarters here.
