In a statement, party leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Harpal Singh Cheema said Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and Jakhar were planning to rig the elections.

In what capacity was Jakhar attending government meetings when he was neither an MLA, nor an MP or minister, asked Cheema.

“Why does he interfere in government schemes and policy making? Capt Amarinder should answer as to why leaders rejected by public are involved in government work,” he said.

Cheema said such interference was not a good sign for democracy. “By doing so, the Congress government and party leaders are weakening democracy,” he added.

Cheema further said interference in election-related matters was against the rules of free and fair elections. “The Election Commission should take cognisance of this and take suitable action against such leaders,” he added.

He also urged the Governor to seek an explanation from the state government on the matter.
