Congress to name candidates for civic poll by next week
With the State Election Commission expected to announce the schedule for the municipal elections in the coming days, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Amrinder Raja Warring today held meeting with senior leaders made in charge of the screening committees for the five corporation that go to the polls.
The municipal corporations of Amritsar, Patiala, Jalandhar, Phagwara and Ludhiana and 44 municipal councils/nagar panchayats are going to the polls.
Warring said the candidates would be finalised by next week. He said the senior leaders made chairpersons of the screening committees were Tripat Rajinder Bajwa (Amritsar), Rana KP Singh (Ludhiana), Gurkirat Singh (Jalandhar), Kuljit Singh Nagra (Patiala) and Aruna Chaudhary (Phagwara).
Each of the panel, having five members, would screen candidates and recommend names to the state-level election committee. The 44-member state panel has the PPCC chief, Leader of the Opposition Partap Bajwa, former ministers Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Sukhjinder Randhawa, OP Soni, Vijay Inder Singla as its members.
