Muktsar, January 31

Four months after a private bus full of passengers had fallen into Sirhind canal near Jhabelwali village here on Muktsar-Kotkapura highway on September 19 last year, wherein nine people lost their lives and 11 others got injured, the authorities concerned have not yet started the work on the construction of two new bridges on both Sirhind feeder and Rajasthan feeder canals.

The farmers have been lodging a protest against the private toll collection company since then, demanding construction of two new bridges on these canals.

Puran Singh Wattu, president, Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta Dakaunda), Muktsar district, said, “The company officials once tried to enact a drama by bringing some construction material to start the work on new bridges. We will lift our protest only when the construction of these bridges completes by 60 per cent.”

Muktsar SDM Kanwarjit Singh Mann said, “I have sought the status report by issuing a notice to the private toll company, which has built this road and operating the toll plaza here. They will have to build two new bridges.”

The widening of this nearly 30-km road from 7 metre to 10 metre had started in 2014. However, it is incomplete till date.
