Cop suspended for 'slapping' sarpanch in Punjab's Abohar
A police official has been placed under suspension and transferred to the district police lines for allegedly slapping a sarpanch of Seed Farm panchayat in full public view on Tuesday evening.
The incident led to a protest outside the police post, with villagers demanding action against Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Pappu Ram, who was stationed at the City-1 police station in Abohar.
According to preliminary investigations, villagers had reported a ruckus at a local house, prompting a call to the police helpline.
ASI Pappu Ram arrived at the scene shortly thereafter. Sarpanch Chhinderpal Singh, along with other villagers, was already present, attempting to mediate the situation.
It was learnt that without provocation, the ASI allegedly slapped the sarpanch, sparking anger among the villagers.
The situation escalated, with villagers gathering outside the special police post in protest.
DSP Sukhwinder Singh Brar and police station in charge Maninder Singh arrived at the scene to hear the concerns of the panchayat members and the protesters, who demanded the ASI’s suspension.
Following the investigation, senior officials accepted the demand for action. The ASI was directed to report to the district police lines in Fazilka, pending further inquiry into the incident.
