Even when most of the Bagri-speaking women present at the concluding ceremony of the two-day cricket match organised by the district police at Bhagsar village here were not inclined to come out of “purdah”, they looked supportive to Mission Nishchay, an initiative that aims to foster community participation with a special focus on youth and women in curbing the drug menace.

Bhagsar village is spread over a total geographical area of 1,524 hectares and has a total population of 2,658 people, out of which male population is 1,381 while female population is 1,277. Literacy rate of Bhagsar village is 52.78 percent out of which 60.75 percent males and 44.17 percent females are literate.

SSP Pragya Jain, who spent much time interacting with women, said that under Mission Nishchay, youth is being encouraged towards sports and they are being provided with equipment for the same. In the two-day cricket tournament at Bhagsar village, 32 teams from different villages participated, she added.

The SSP and MLA Amandeep Singh Goldy Musafir encouraged the winning players by distributing prizes and cricket kits. Apart from this, saplings were also planted in the cricket stadium.

Besides seeking support of women to play an active role for the mission, SSP Jain appealed to the youth to cooperate in identifying the drug smugglers. If someone sells drugs around them, they should report it to the police. Their information will be kept strictly confidential and strict action will be taken against drug traffickers, she assured.

She said that if a person is addicted to drugs and wants to quit drugs, he will be referred to a de-addiction centre for treatment. “Our aim is to protect the youth from the ill effects of drugs and to increase police-public interaction, so that they share information about drug traffickers with the police without any fear,” she added.
