Chandigarh, August 2

Sleuths from the Punjab Vigilance Bureau surrounded the house of ex-DGP Sumedh Singh Saini on Monday evening in what seemed a bid to arrest him.

Nearly 20 police officials in mufti blocked the two gates of the former DGP’s private house in Sector 20-D in Chandigarh. Officials of the Punjab Police as well as the Punjab Vigilance did not respond to calls on the motive behind the deployment of teams in civvies at the former DGP’s house. The teams did not make any attempt to break into the house till the filing of this report. Saini’s lawyers had reached the house and they were allowed to enter into it.

There has been speculation that the ex-DGP can be booked by the Vigilance Bureau over his ownership of the house, which it is alleged did not meet his known sources of income. However, there is no official confirmation regarding the allegation. The Vigilance had asked Saini to deposit the monthly rent of about Rs 2.5 lakh he earned from the house to the treasury.

Saini was also recently questioned by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the Kotkpaura police firing incident on whether the police officials had opened fire illegally at a mob that was protesting the series of sacrilege incidents.
