Chandigarh, November 8
A local court has convicted Jagtar Singh Tara in the 2004 Burail jailbreak case. The court convicted the accused after he voluntarily made the confessional statement.
In its order, the court said: “The case is fixed for recording prosecution evidence. However, the accused made a statement confessing his guilt. He was explained the consequences of making such a plea, however, he remained adamant. The court is satisfied that plea of admission of guilt by the accused is voluntary. In view of his confessional statement, the convict has been convicted and sentenced under Sections 120B and 224, IPC.”
Tara has already been convicted in Beant Singh assassination case. He has been in jail for many years due to which his period of sentence has been set off against the two-year term imposed on him after today’s conviction. Beant case convicts Jagtar Singh Hawara, Paramjit Singh and Tara had fled the jail by digging a tunnel. — TNS
