Cycle rally from Fazilka to Sadqi checkpost

A bicycle rally was organised by the district administration from Fazilka to Sadqi joint checkpost on the International Border on the occasion of World Tourism Day.

Flagging off the rally, Deputy Commissioner Amarpreet Kaur Sandhu said the district had immense potential to develop tourism. She said the Sadqi JCP was in third place in the state after Wagah and Hussainiwala where the retreat ceremony took place every evening, adding that people from far and near came to witness it. She said similarly, the war memorial built in the memory of the martyrs of 1971 at Asafwala was a holy place that connected generations to patriotism.

The DC said World Tourism Day has been organised on September 27 each year since 1980. She said the date marked the anniversary of the adoption of the Statutes of the Organisation in 1970 that paved the way for the establishment of UN Tourism five years later.

Cyclists participated in the rally and worked to create awareness about the places in the district regarding tourism. They also made people aware of the ‘Swachhta hi Seva’ campaign.

Additional Deputy Commissioner General Dr Mandeep Kaur and District Education Officer Brij Mohan Bedi were also present at the event.

The ADC also monitored a cleanliness drive at the ‘Ghantaghar’ (clock tower) located in the heart of the town. This heritage structure was built over a hundred years ago by the Periwal Family.
