The rapid rise in Covid cases may cast a shadow over the upcoming Assembly elections in the state as the number of daily cases may reach 1,000 by January 5.

According to a note prepared by the Health Department, which is to be placed before the Chief Secretary on Monday, the cases may witness a phenomenal rise. The department has said going by various statistical models, the cases may jump to 1,000 by January 5.

The number of daily cases have already witnessed a seven-fold increase in the past three days.

The number of total active cases was consistent at around 300 cases for the past five months. With a slight increase three days ago, the number of active cases rose to 390 on Tuesday.

The Covid-19 cases then started increasing rapidly three days ago. On Wednesday, the state reported 100 cases, followed by 167 on Thursday and 221 on Friday. The outcome was that in just three days, the active cases jumped to 767.

This means, it has taken just three days to double the cases. On Saturday, the total number of cases stood at 1,041 in the state.

Significantly, as the model code of conduct is expected

to come into effect shortly, the Election Commission is also closely watching the developing Covid situation in the state.
