Days after some social activists drew attention of PCC ex-president Sunil Jakhar to the poor supply of Covid vaccine to his native village Panjkosi, the Health Department has intensified its drive.

It was brought to Jakhar’s notice that only 4,000 people were vaccinated in Abohar subdivision in the past week, whereas 1 lakh people were inoculated in Ludhiana and around 90,000 in neighbouring areas of Sriganganagar and Hanumangarh on a single day on Saturday.

Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu happens to be the minister-incharge for Fazilka district, but hundreds of people have been returning empty-handed from vaccine centres daily in all subdivisions. There seems to be some improvement in the situation now even when people were still waiting for the second dose of Covaxin. The Sub-Divisional Civil Hospital in Abohar today set a record by providing Covishield vaccine to 2,300 people. The timing for vaccination has been extended from 9 am-2 pm to 4 pm now and 50 health workers, including ASHA workers and ANMs, have been deployed for registration and vaccination. Yesterday, camps were held at the government hospital and Naam Charcha Ghar and 2,700 people got inoculated.

SMO Dr Gaganjit Singh and Nodal officer Dr Sahib Ram said efforts were on to step up availability of vaccine. — OC
